Welcome!

Please feel free to post any comments regarding how you are effected by the increasing ground water level.

The goal of this blog is to engage the City of Fircrest into installing a drainage system in our vicinity to promote a more livable area to reside, as well as stabilizing our property values.

Fircrest Responsibilities

CITY OF FIRCREST

  1. Needs to provide adequate drainage for all parcels in which they granted building permits, for current and future building sites.
  2. Has prior knowledge that Electron Park was a spring fed swamp and the surrounding building sites may need improved drainage systems.
  3. Is aware that standing water provides an uncontrolled breeding area for mosquitoes and harmful bacteria which could ultimately effect all nearby residents.
  4. Seems to feel it is the homeowners responsibility to provide drainage systems to protect their own property from excess water, originating from off site locations.

I am aware that the City of Fircrest must make the best choices which benefit the entire population, not just a few.

However, I am also aware that this drainage dilemma worsens every year and is also becoming insurmountable for the parcels with the lowest elevation.  This is not just a surface water problem.  If it was, water would quit flowing during weeks without rain.  The water flowing onto my property is coming, via a never ending stream, from the North side of my property.  This water must be channeled to the storm drain which drains to the Leach Creek Holding Basin/Dam.  Please check out the "Interesting Links" which you can monitor the amount of water being released.

The Leach Creek Dam is owned by the City of Tacoma.  The controlled outflow of this Dam directly effects the parcels North of the Leach Creek Holding Basin, Forest Park and Monterey Lane.  If too much water is released, the parcels South of the Dam will become flooded.  When water is held back the water table in Fircrest, fed by natural springs, has no where to go but up.

It is my understanding, that University Place used to obtain their water from 3 wells, located very close to the Leach Creek Holding Basin.  When the water lines began to deteriorate, University Place opted to obtain their water from the City of Tacoma.  This may have been the most economical choice for UP to obtain their water from another location, however the result for Fircrest was that it must have increased the surrounding water table, which I'm guessing is why we are having our current problem.

You don't stop water flow, you can only try to control it.
